About Ray Richard

I began my golf course construction career when a farmer built Easton (MA) Country Club in my back yard. A few years later, I worked at Pine Oaks Golf Club,  a mile from my house. After college, I worked at Cohasset Golf Club in Massachusetts, and this led to a golf superintendent job at Sunningdale Golf Course in New Hampshire.

Five years later, I landed at White Cliffs Country Club in Plymouth,Mass., building the 18-hole Gary Player design with Granger Building Systems.  I became a Certified Golf Course Superintendent, and I won several writing awards from the National Golf Foundation and Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.

Then life got interesting. In 1989, I formed Richard Associates, a golf course development consulting firm that provided construction management for many golf course projects. I developed and built Squirrel Run Golf Course and most of a 18-hole golf course in Plymouth,MA.

While exploring the feasibility of building a golf course on an island in Boston Harbor, I became interested in the construction of Spectacle Island, a 105-acre former landfill. This led to five years working for Jay Cashman, Inc. as a project superintendent.

Life as a marine construction manager included work  with dedicated tugboat captains and pile drivers. Boat rides in hurricane force winds added to the excitement. I worked nights while consulting on golf courses during the day. Thanks to many gallons of black coffee, I completed the conceptualization and construction of Village Links in Plymouth,Mass in 2000.

After completion of the island project, I  continued in the golf course construction business as a project manager and golf writer. I continue to consult on golf course projects of any size from compete projects to tiny tweaks.

I welcome the opportunity to discuss your golf construction needs. Fill out the comment box below and I’ll respond quickly. Another option is to  email me at Ray@richardgolf.com or call me at 508-888-5417.
